The floor beneath them began to tremble and the room filled with the sound of a thousand eggshells cracking. Cyrus had just enough time to hug Kyna to him before the floor gave way and they plunged down into the darkest heart of the mountain. |

"They won't get very far," the Dark Man said. |

The goateed man and his master were following the trail of Cyrus's blooda trail that had started out as a flood but was rapidly dwindling to a trickle of maroon spots in the dust of the walkway. Because of this, the goateed man held the sword ready in one hand while anxiously probing the darkness with the flashlight in his other hand; he didn't respond to his master's rosy prediction. |

The Dark Man followed a few feet behind. Because his assistant's hands were busy with the sword and the flashlight, he was forced to carry the suitcase as well as his own light and he wasn't happy about itthe case was heavy. To take his mind off this temporary aggravation, the Dark Man entertained himself by creating and then discarding a series of dark mental scenarios starring Kyna and Cyrus. |

"Do not worry," the Dark Man said, accurately interpreting his assistant's stony silence. "Trigg will not be able to regenerate before we find him. And once he is disposed of, the woman will be easy." |

The goateed man smiled and nodded, but he wished his master were just a little less sure of himself. |

The sorcerers were covered with dried but still sticky wolf's blood, and if that wasn't bad enough, the cavern was as cold as a meat locker and was bombarding them with icy condensation. This "false rain" made the trail slippery in places and it took all of the goateed man's concentration to maintain his balance while juggling the flashlight and the fifteen-pound |
